See-To, Asst Professor at the Dept of Industrial & Systems Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, describes the challenges faced by SMBs in trying to harness the potential of crowdsourcing, and uses the 'open source' movement to illustrate some of the problems associated with crowdsourcing. He cites Harley Davidson as an early example of crowdsourcing success.
Crowdsourcing is the act of outsourcing tasks, traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, to an undefined, large group of people or community (a "crowd"), through an open call.
