Continuing to grow the business will remain as the key CIO business strategy for the next few years while their priority will be to increase the top line by being efficient, flexible and agile said analyst firm Gartner at an event in Singapore.

Aman Munglani, principal research analys at Gartner, said that to do this, technologies like virtualization, cloud computing and the ability to control data growth would be key to achieving this.

Especially troublesome to CIOs is the data growth that is estimated to have a whopping 913% compound annual growth rate. This means Munglani said, the corresponding growth in unstructured data will also be a problem. Driving this growth will be factors like compliances needs and backup and security issues.

To combat this, Munglani said businesses need to look at implementing new IT policies in conjunction with the use of technologies like tiered storage, deduplication and solid state drives (SSD).

Moving forward, businesses will be willing to spend on IT but only intelligently Munglani said. “CIOs want to see their infrastructure utilized, agile and flexible. They want IT to be enabler rather than a cost center,” he said.

Unfortunately, not all technologies may be so relevant or useful.

Munglani cautioned that while cloud computing may have moved beyond the hype, unrealistic expectations on its capabilities still remained. There were however still significant benefits that cloud computing had and he saw traction in private clouds for larger businesses. He added that cloud computing would offer SMBs particular advantages he added, but it still needed issues like security and access to be resolved.

Helping others reach the cloud

Tan Teng Cheong, general manager for commercial business at Dell Singapore who was speaking at the same event, said that contrary to most expectations, Dell's consumer business accounted for only 20% of the company's overall revenues.

In fact, most large cloud deployments were made on Dell infrastructure Tan said quoting customers like Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft. In APAC, Tan said that some of Dell’s customers included China’s largest search engine Baidu, popular instant messaging provider Tencent and gaming company Nexon.
